Light emitting diodes, or LEDs, are semiconductor material that emit light when energized with electricity. Recent technological advancements in brightness have allowed LEDs to be used as primary light sources and replace arc-lamp, incandescent, and fluorescent bulbs. The advantages of LEDs over conventional bulbs are many, and include higher efficiency, less heat, and longer lifetimes (over 50,000 hours typical!)
